New Zealand has a remarkably strong car culture. From vintage and classic cars to JDM icons, European performance cars, American muscle, modern supercars and everything in between, there is a community of people across the country who share a genuine passion for cars. Importantly, that passion isn’t just about the cars themselves. It’s about the people.
A country of car enthusiasts New Zealand’s automotive community spans generations and marques. There are established owners’ clubs, specialist groups, motorsport communities, classic car clubs, informal coffee meets and large-scale events throughout the country. The Vintage Car Club of New Zealand alone has more than 8,000 members, 36 branches and thousands of vehicles and motorcycles represented across its membership. MotorSport New Zealand also lists more than 90 member clubs, with those clubs organising hundreds of motorsport events around the country each year. The common thread is simple: people enjoy sharing their cars with other people who understand them.
That’s where Matchbox comes in
Matchbox was created around the idea that car ownership should be about more than having somewhere to park a vehicle. It should be about having a place to bring the automotive community together. Our facility provides a home for some of New Zealand’s most interesting cars, but just as importantly, it provides a space for the people who own them. From member evenings and social gatherings to Motorsport watch parties, displays and automotive drive events, Matchbox is designed to create opportunities for enthusiasts to meet, talk cars and build relationships.
A place to share your passion
Walk into a room full of car enthusiasts and conversations tend to happen naturally. A new arrival becomes a talking point. A restoration creates questions. A rare specification sparks a story. A particularly good road becomes the subject of the next weekend’s drive. That is what makes automotive communities so enjoyable.
Everyone has a story about their car. Maybe it is the car they dreamed about owning as a kid. Maybe it is the car they spent years restoring. Maybe it is the first performance car they bought. Or maybe it is simply the car they have always wanted to own. Matchbox gives those stories a place to be shared.
Events are part of the experience A storage facility doesn’t have to feel like a row of locked doors. We want Matchbox to feel alive. Our events are an opportunity for members and invited guests to come together in a relaxed environment surrounded by cars. That could mean an informal members evening, a motorsport screening, a car launch, a breakfast, a social function or simply an opportunity to catch up with other enthusiasts. The format may change, but the objective remains the same: Bring good people together around great cars.
New Zealand’s existing car clubs demonstrate just how important these social experiences are. Across the country, clubs run everything from coffee mornings and drives to rallies, swap meets, displays and social evenings.
Matchbox aims to complement that culture rather than compete with it. You don’t need to own a million-dollar car one of the best things about the car community is that passion isn’t measured by the price of the car. A perfectly restored classic can be just as interesting as a brand-new supercar. A modified Japanese icon can attract just as much attention as an Italian exotic. And sometimes the car that generates the most conversation is the one with the best story.
Matchbox is ultimately about that shared enthusiasm. A home for the automotive community we want Matchbox to become more than a place where cars are stored. We want it to be somewhere enthusiasts can meet. Somewhere they can show their cars. Somewhere they can discover new cars. Somewhere they can exchange stories, ideas and advice. And somewhere they can simply spend time with people who share the same obsession.
Because owning a great car is one thing.
Having a community to enjoy it with makes it even better.
Welcome to Matchbox.
